About the LFHS Formerly the
Midlothian FHS, the LFHS is a non-profit making Society consisting of members
interested in promoting the study of genealogy and family history, starting and
extending research into family roots, and in furthering interest in and
facilities for genealogical research. We are situated in Bonnyrigg which is
just a stone throw away (7 Miles south) from Edinburgh. The Society`s Library
is housed in the Lasswade High School Centre`s Library which is open during the
same hours as the school library from 08:30 to 16:00 hours daily (closed for
lunch 12:00-12:50) and in the evenings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 18:15 to
21:00 during term time. What Resources does the
Society have? The Society has a number of resources at its
disposal, however the material is for reference use only and cannot be
borrowed. There is a selection of books and pamphlets for the absolute
beginner, some more specialised guides for the more advanced members and
newsletters from other Family History Societies. There are files on alternative
sources of information from Scottish Public Libraries to the National
Repositories like Register House and Scottish Record Office. We have an
expanding collection of microfiche copies of Edinburgh Directories of various
dates, files of commercial search organisations and of various courses and
events. Of course the school library has a number of publications and a
collection of maps covering Scotland and Northern England.
What do members do? The Society strives
to keep all its members interested and we have access to the library`s
computers and the Internet. Many members have volunteered in projects, e.g.
indexing of Census Returns as well as their own interests or just helping
others with their research. There are many more details about the Society which
you will find in this web site. When does the Society
meet?
Every Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm. We have a varied
programme to suit all.

Our newsletters and booklets provide information about research being done by
members and a forum for requests for help from outside the area. We currently
have members from all over the world and with such a wide membership there are
lots of possible links. Some of the members are happy to assist with simple
research, the only charge being for any additional expense incurred. It is also
possible to put members in touch with experienced researchers if required.
Newsletter The society
provides a newsletter to members to inform and keep abreast of the activities
by members or just provide interesting stories about family history. If you are
a member you will receive this from time to time. A full set of backnumbers are
available in the Library. The list below provides content details of each
newsletter. If any of the contents draws your attention and you do not have a
copy of the newsletter drop an email or letter to the Secretary requesting
information. The society is always looking for articles to be included in
future publications. If you have anything you think might interest the members,
whether it is pertinent to your family or not, or something you have found of
interest, funny or otherwise, the society would be grateful to hear from you.
